Today the 14 Police Security Officers of Course 2 graduated at the South Australia Police (SAPOL) Academy.
The members supported each other through the challenging aspects of the Police Security Officer training course and leant on the guidance of their mentors to enable them to all graduate today.
Police Security Officer Han was one of today’s graduating members. She is a passionate amateur boxer and has trained in self-defence.
“Competing played a huge role in my life and taught me many skills such as self-discipline, confidence and overcoming adversity. Many of these skills were applied throughout my training and will help me in my role,” Han said.
It’s been a dream for Han to work in policing since she was a child.
As the youngest member on the course, Han said her independence has grown substantially and now has a strong presence which will assist her with diffusing situations.
She said those wanting to apply for a Police Security Officer role should know the Police Academy will offer support to new recruits throughout their training.
Also graduating today is Benjamin who worked in the hospitality and fitness industry before joining SAPOL. He wants a career that helps people, puts him out of his comfort zone and which has career progression opportunities.
He was initially concerned about the course exams and the firearms training but said that was unwarranted.
“The mentors prepare you well before any tests and are they are there to help you grow,” Benjamin said.
“The trainers were very thorough, but were also very fun to be around and made the experience memorable. Learning legislation was challenging, I found writing information down and recording myself quoting legislation then listening to it in the car really helped me.”
His advice to others considering a career as a Police Security Officer is to have an open mind to learn, be prepared to get outside of your comfort zone and lean on course mentors.
SAPOL is currently recruiting for Police Security Officers and is keen to hear from people who are committed to contributing to the safety and security of the state. Today’s graduating class had ages ranging from 19 to 56 years, and they had a range of previous employment experience including finance, retail, massage, sports, health and the food industry.
