The Andrews Labor Government is helping protect Victoria’s precious coastal environment from the impacts of climate change.
Minister for the Environment and Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio today announced more than $1 million has been awarded to fund projects that protect the future of Victoria’s coast.
Victoria’s Resilient Coast Grants are delivering $800,000 to five local councils and land managers to better understand and manage the risk of coastal hazards in the City of Port Phillip, Wilsons Promontory National Park, Mornington Peninsula, Aire Valley and along the Great Ocean Road.
The grants fund projects that will improve management and adaptation to coastal hazard risk in line with Victoria’s Resilient Coast – Adapting for 2100+.
More than $230,000 has also been awarded to 27 community-led projects from Portland to Gippsland Lakes through this year’s Coastcare Victoria Community Grants Program.
Including Friends of Flinders Coastline Inc. who received funding for their Bushland Regeneration Project ensuring native flora and fauna and thrive along the Mornington Peninsula, and
Grant recipients also include Threatened Species Conservancy for a citizen science projects to survey coastal habitats around Apollo Bay to assess coastal butterfly communities, Port Phillip EcoCentre to ‘penguin-proof’ plants to increase native vegetation along the foreshore and many more.
Grants of up to $10,000 will support a variety of projects across the state to support stewardship and education, strengthen volunteer groups and support Traditional Owner self-determination.
Victoria has more than 2,500 km of coastline, including extensive sandy beach systems, rocky coasts, bays, inlets and estuaries, coastal lakes and floodplains.
Since 2014, the Labor Government has invested approximately nearly $95 million in marine and coastal projects.
