Great Barrier Reef Clean-Up Calling All Volunteers

Council is calling on residents to pull on a pair of gloves and roll up their sleeves for the Great Barrier Reef Clean-Up at Bushland Beach Park on Saturday 24 October 2026 between 8:30am and 10:30am.

The program is designed to get residents involved in protecting local waterways and catchments, removing litter before it flows downstream and ending up in the Reef.

Mayor Nick Dametto said the clean-up was an open invitation to residents who wished to play an active role in protecting Townsville’s coastline and Great Barrier Reef.

“The Great Barrier Reef is one of our region’s most important natural assets. Every piece of litter we remove from our beaches, parks or waterways is one less item that can make its way into the ocean.

“By getting involved in clean-up events like this, residents can make a real difference to the health of our coastline and help protect the environment for future generations.”

Division 2 Councillor Brodie Phillips said the clean-up will be great for the local area, helping build on the sense of community and improve the local environment.

“We’ve got a great community here in Bushy Beach and with the Bushland Beach Park being such an important community asset, we want to see residents come down and help keep this fantastic space a litter-free and family friendly,” Cr Phillips said.

“Division 2 residents enjoy coastline running from the Bohle River to Saunders Beach, so we need to do our bit to help keep it healthy and litter-free.

“All clean-up equipment is provided, including bags and gloves, so you just need to turn up sun-smart and ready to help for a couple of hours.

“Everyone who participates will receive a cool drink and a native plant as a thank you.”

The Great Barrier Reef Clean-Up is a ReefClean program delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation in partnership with Clean Up Australia and funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust.
