Great Barrier Reef tourism industry boost

The Australian Government today announced $8.2 million to support Great Barrier Reef projects, including $3.2 million to engage tourism operators in reef monitoring and reef site-stewardship actions, along with $5 million for Townsville’s Reef HQ.

Engaging tourism operators

Under the initiative, marine tourism operators can submit a proposal though an AusTender process for in-water conservation and monitoring activities to ensure Reef tourism sites are well maintained and ready to welcome new guests when travel restrictions ease.

Eligible tourism operators on the Reef will be contracted to monitor coral condition, control native pest outbreaks, and rehabilitate local reef sites, supporting existing jobs in the industry.

Funding for Reef HQ

This funding for Reef HQ will see a modern new façade, and a new admissions and foyer area as part of a suite of updates to enhance visitor experiences at the aquarium and education centre. It helps Reef HQ attract more visitors and boost regional employment.
