We have officially opened our Great Southern Hub in Albany, it will provide accommodation for family, friends and carers of those in palliative care at the Albany Community Hospice. This was made possible by the incredible generosity of a WA brother and sister.

At its opening our CEO, Ashley Reid, said that the Great Southern Hub has been made possible thanks to the incredible generosity of brother and sister, John and Joan Street.

“John Street was a Perth businessman who left a substantial gift in his Will to Cancer Council WA in memory of his sister Joan who died of throat cancer,” Mr Reid said.

“He was a genuine hardworking person who avoided the limelight but wanted some lasting good to be done with his money.

“John was very clear that he wanted the funds to go towards facilities for palliative care.

“It is thanks to the incredible generosity of John (and his sister Joan) that we able to officially open the Great Southern Hub in Albany today.”

About the Great Southern Hub

The new facility offers six self-catering, fully furnished accommodation units ranging from studio’s to two bedroom apartments for the use of family and supporters of Albany Community Hospice inpatients.

The Great Southern Hub has a strong home-like, non-clinical environment with gardens, plenty of light and space that provides a warm and welcoming space. The premises offers tranquil, calm and peaceful surroundings for people going through challenging times.

Accommodation is currently offered to anyone in WA, Australia or internationally, who would like to spend time with, and support loved ones in palliative care at the Albany Community Hospice.

In addition to accommodation services, the Great Southern Hub has services and programs that aim to lessen the impact of cancer within the community as well as raise awareness of the importance of cancer support and prevention in the Great Southern region.
