Don’t LEAF it until the last minute to check out the free Logan Eco Action Festival (LEAF) at the Griffith University Logan Campus on Sunday.
LEAF is an interactive community festival that is growing into one of Logan’s largest annual events and showcases new ways to decrease everyone’s environmental footprint.
It could be as simple as planting natives in the backyard.
Griffith University Professor and botanist in the Environmental Futures Research Institute Catherine Pickering will give away Brisbane wattle seed from university gardens at this year’s festival, which can help save our local plants and animals.
“Globally, over a million species are threatened with extinction, but we can do a lot as individuals,” Professor Pickering said.
“Use our free app groNATIVE to access information on more than 400 native plants from the area which will provide food for local wildlife including birds, butterflies and bees, as well as information about local plants threatened with extinction in the wild, suitable for suburban gardens.”
“There have been around 18,000 downloads of the groNATIVE since it was released and it’s a really easy way to do your bit for the environment.”
There’s also a virtual forest at the festival, with a display of the Panda Cubes, created by Queensland College of Art Creative and Interactive Media lecturers, Paul Bardini and Professor Andrew Brown.
“These interactive objects collectively create a forest of translucent cubes varying in size, that light up and play chip-tune melodies when handled,” Professor Brown said.
“We want people to walk amongst the cubes and interact with them, which will trigger various responses from them.”
“It is pretty spectacular as their construction involves a range of ‘maker’ processes including laser cut surfaces, 3D printed corners, programmed music and lights on Arduino-class microelectronics.”
Everyone’s favourite gardener Costa Georgiadis (pictured), host of Gardening Australia is back again at LEAF this year, along with Logan’s new Food Ambassador Bruno Loubet. The Environmental Cowboy will entertain audiences on the main stage and the Eco Dome offers classes in everything from making your own beard oil to coffee body scrub.
