Griffith City Council will roll out the welcome mat this Saturday, 22 February for members of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) NSW executive board.
ALGWA supports and promotes women in local government through advocacy, advice and action.
ALGWA was formed in 1951 to support and encourage women’s participation in local government.
Griffith City Councillor and ALGWA Executive Member, Anne Napoli, is looking forward to welcoming the 14 women from across the state, who make up the executive committee.
“I am really excited to have them come to Griffith and see what a wonderful place we live in,” Cr Napoli said.
With the next local government election being held this September, Cr Napoli said the meeting was a timely reminder to local women to consider throwing their hat in the ring.
‘It would be fantastic to see more local women consider running to represent their community,” Cr Napoli said.
“ALGWA’s vision for local government is that 50 per cent of elected representatives and leaders in councils are women.
“In Griffith we are making some progress with 33 per cent of our elected councillors women. That is just below the current national average of 35 per cent.
“Historically women have been under-represented on councils however local communities benefit when there is greater diversity in community leadership.”
ALGWA has successfully campaigned for Maternity leave paid, paid Parental leave, and continues to fight for the rights of women to achieve financial independence, through equality in jobs, wages and better conditions in the workplace.
