Gutwein’s review will cut jobs and services

Tasmanian Labor
  • Review is the next battle in Gutwein’s war with state service
  • More work for the Liberals’ razor gang
  • ‘Efficiencies’ is code for cuts
  • Tasmania’s public servants should brace themselves for job cuts, as Peter Gutwein begins a review of the state service.

Shadow Treasurer David O’Byrne said the final terms of reference released today for a review of the state service demonstrate the Premier’s war with the public service is not over.

“Peter Gutwein has waged six years of war with the public service attacking jobs and frontline services.

“The terms of reference released today talk about efficiencies, economies and streamlining – and we all know that’s code for cuts.

“This review is a Trojan horse for cuts to jobs and frontline services.”

Mr O’Byrne said Peter Gutwein will use cuts achieved through the review to cover up his incompetence as Treasurer.

“Peter Gutwein has slashed half a billion dollars from jobs and frontline services in the public sector and has overseen debt rising to $1.4 billion.

“He has few ideas about how to pay down that debt, and that’s why he’ll be looking for even deeper cuts to the public sector.

“There’s nothing wrong with a review of the state service in and of itself, but we know Peter Gutwein has a more sinister agenda.

“It’s bad for Tasmania and it undermines the economy when you go after public service jobs and frontline services.”

    David O’Byrne

    Shadow Treasurer
