Harmony Week Celebrations in Leeton Shire

Leeton Shire Council

This year’s Harmony Week will be held Monday 21 March to Sunday 27 March.

Harmony Week is a celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity and is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Council’s Mayor Tony Reneker said Council is marking this year’s national Harmony Week with a citizenship ceremony to help showcase the Leeton Shire’s strong spirit of inclusiveness.

Four conferees from Pakistan and the Philippines will become Australian citizens as part of a ceremony at the Leeton Visitors Information Centre to be held on Monday 21 March 2022.

“Harmony Week in Leeton Shire is a great opportunity to celebrate our rich multicultural heritage, strengthen our collective sense of belonging and welcome our newest citizens,” said Mayor Reneker.

“This citizenship ceremony will remind the community why our cultural diversity is one of our greatest assets and we are stronger because of it,” he said.

Harmony Week will include the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March 2022.

“It’s important that we all recognise and celebrate our unique, diverse society and stand up against any racism and discrimination,” said Mayor Reneker.

As part of the celebrations, the Leeton Multicultural Support Group will be hosting a free Harmony Day Lunch on Sunday 20 March 2022 at the Leeton Uniting Church Hall.

Everyone is welcome and this is a great opportunity to come and enjoy the food from different cultures and meet new friends.

Attendees are asked to bring some food to share.

Mayor Reneker encourages the community to get involved.

“It is very special and interesting when our community comes together to share our various cultural backgrounds through food music, dance and traditional dress,” said Mayor Reneker.
