Have your say on expanding voting rights to young people in ACT

Australian Greens

Today the Justice and Community Safety Committee in the ACT Legislative Assembly announced an inquiry into extending voting rights to 16 and 17 year olds.

All quotes attributed to Andrew Braddock MLA in his capacity as ACT Greens Spokesperson for Democracy and co-sponsor of the ACT Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021.

“A deep and genuine community conversation is a vital part of the process to extend voting rights to 16 and 17 year olds. I welcome this inquiry and look forward to hearing what the community has to say.

“If you are a young person, or have a young person in your life that you love and value, please give this issue some thought and have a say by writing a submission.

“This is an opportunity for young people to have their say on the draft Bill.

“As a co-sponsor of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, I hope the ACT will once again be leading the country by creating a healthier, more robust democracy that includes young people.

“The ACT Greens believe in empowering the next generation to be involved in the decisions that impact them, which is why this inquiry is an important part of the process to partake in.”

Submissions close on 28th January 2022, and the online survey on 7 February 2022.
