The NSW Government is calling on the community to help develop the first comprehensive long-term housing strategy for the State.
Minister for Water, Property and Housing, Melinda Pavey released a discussion paper for the public, industry and other stakeholders to have their say on the future of housing in NSW. The discussion paper includes a proposed vision for housing in NSW, factors influencing housing in NSW and the strategic context in which the housing strategy will be delivered, proposed preliminary directions and discussion questions to target feedback. Mrs Pavey said the discussion paper will help inform the development of a 20-year whole-ofgovernment housing strategy that addresses everything from homelessness to home ownership.
“For the first time the NSW Government is creating a whole-of-sector strategy that is intended to address housing legislation, policy, and program delivery within a framework to meet the State’s housing needs now, over the next 20 years and beyond,” Mrs Pavey said. “This strategy is another example of the NSW Government working to provide certainty for housing providers and communities feeling the strain from the impacts to their health, employment and housing stability as a result of COVID-19.
“Housing can play a role in our State’s economic recovery by having the right policies, and support in place for those who need it the most.”
While the impact of COVID-19 on NSW’s population and economy remains unclear in the immediate term, the Government is committed to developing a long-term vision for the housing market over the next two decades. By 2041, it is expected there will be a need for 1 million new homes in Greater Sydney and a further 290,000 new homes in regional NSW.
Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said the development of a NSW Housing Strategy demonstrates the Government’s commitment to ensuring everyone in the community has a safe, well-connected place to live no matter their circumstances. “The housing needs of our community are becoming more diverse so we need a variety of housing connected to transport, employment and public spaces that make for great places to live, work and play,” Mr Stokes said.
“Community consultation will play a vital role in developing a comprehensive housing strategy and we encourage everyone to read the discussion paper and provide their feedback.”
