HAVE YOUR SAY ON THE NAMES OF TWO RESERVES IN THE MID-COAST LGA

The Geographical Names Board is seeking community feedback on proposals by Mid-Coast Council to name two reserves in the suburb of Harrington.

Chair of the Geographical Names Board Narelle Underwood said feedback is being sought on the proposed names: Alexander Newton Reserve and Dhunggaarr Reserve.

“It is important that place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” Mrs Underwood said.

“We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed name.”

Alexander Newton Reserve is proposed for a reserve located between Pretoria Parade and the Manning River in Harrington.

The proposed name commemorates the late Alexander Newton, a pioneer who settled along the Manning River frontage. The Newton family built many ships at their Pelican Shipyard over a period of 31 years. The proposed reserve is where the shipyard once lined the foreshore.

Dhunggaarr Reserve is proposed for a reserve located between Diamantina Crescent and the Manning River in Harrington.

The proposed name, pronounced ‘Doong-gar’, is an Aboriginal word for pelican, from Guttang language, Biripi country. The reserve is located along the banks of the Manning River, the former site of the Pelican Shipyard.

Details of the proposal can also be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board’s website.
