Tasmanians can have their say on eight potential bridge locations as part of investigations into the feasibility of a second Cam River crossing near Somerset.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said the Rockliff Liberal Government launched a feasibility study into a second crossing after floods in October last year damaged the existing bridge, forcing one lane to be closed while repairs were completed.
“Last October’s repairs had a big impact on the local community and raised discussion about alternative routes,” Mr Ferguson said.
“The Government has responded and the feasibility study has examined the need for a second bridge and developed eight potential second crossing locations, along with the required road connections.
“We are now asking the public to provide input on whether there is a need for a second crossing and on the eight potential crossing locations.
“The comments we receive will help us further develop the study, which will be publicly released when completed next year.”
Mr Ferguson said the study would provide a sound basis on which to decide whether a second crossing is needed.
“It will look at the impacts of a new crossing, and pros and cons of the various locations identified,” he said.
“If it is deemed that a second bridge is merited, any proposal will be considered for funding in future budgets.
“A new two-lane bridge is currently under construction and is expected to open in early 2024. This bridge is wider, safer, and designed to withstand significant flood events.”

The period for comment runs from Wednesday, 25 October to Tuesday, 21 November 2023.
