Hazard reduction in Pilliga Nature Reserve

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is carrying out a large hazard reduction burn in Pilliga Nature Reserve between Coonabarabran and Narrabri over five days from 20 June, weather permitting.

Hazard reduction burn

The burn will be about 25km long and up to 1km wide and may be visible from the Newell Highway.

The burn, comprising ground and aerial ignition aims to create a large fuel reduced fire break on the eastern edge of the Pilliga Forest along Scratch Road.

Smoke may be visible in the localities of Willala and Goolhi.

All National Parks and Wildlife Service hazard reduction burns are coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.
