Health infrastructure works fast-tracked

The ACT Government is fast-tracking improvements and maintenance to health service facilities across Canberra as part of the Government’s economic survival package to keep Canberra working through the COVID-19 pandemic.

These fast-tracked projects focus on work that can start immediately, be completed by 30 June 2020, support local businesses and keep Canberrans employed.

Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said works recently commenced at the Tresillian Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Family Centre would employ local Canberra businesses and improve the facility for patients, families and staff.

“QEII delivers an essential service to Canberra’s families, providing support, advice and guidance to help families experiencing complex health and behavioural issues.”

“Since March, more than 180 families have received support with a residential stay. The upgrades we are making to QEII will provide a more comfortable, welcoming environment for families and visitors who are often experiencing a difficult time.”

“Improvements to landscaping, shaded areas, pergolas and the play space will create a space for families to spend time together,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

The reception, consultation areas, CCTV and security features are also being upgraded to help improve safety and functionality at the facility.

Free Wi-Fi will be installed, helping consumers and families keep in touch with loved ones while staying at QEII. The heating and cooling system will be replaced shortly.

The ACT Government has contracted five local firms to complete the upgrades.

“QEII is one of several projects we are fast-tracking across Canberra’s health system, ensuring we continue to deliver better healthcare services while supporting jobs and the economy during COVID-19,” said Minister Stephen-Smith.

Fast-tracked health service maintenance and infrastructure works will employ around 100 tradies and contractors. Projects that will be delivered in addition to works at QEII include:

  • improvements to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system in Canberra Hospital Building 12
  • improvements to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system in Centenary Hospital for Women and Children
  • security upgrades at the Ngunnawal Bush Healing Farm
  • building improvements to drug and alcohol service facilities
  • electrical, hot water and fire system upgrades to youth mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities.

As stated by QEII Clinical Manager Nursing and Midwifery, Vanessa Bakker:

“The infrastructure projects will support how we do our work with Canberra’s families. The structural changes will significantly improve the operational side of our work and the integrated communications will fundamentally change our work day in and day out.”

“Our team of 55 nurses, midwives, GPs, allied health, administrative personnel and support workers are really looking forward to the end result given the ongoing COVID-19 situation and how it is impacting on new families.”
