‘Healthy Habits’ at heart of Men’s Health Week

This year, Men’s Health Week takes place from 12 to 18 June, giving us the opportunity to highlight the importance of men’s health and to promote and support the health and wellbeing of men in Boroondara.

This year’s theme is ‘Healthy Habits’, focusing on sustainable changes that men and the people around them can implement in their day-to-day lives to improve their health and quality of life.

This encompasses both physical as well as mental health and wellbeing, recognising that in Australia, one in 8 men will experience depression and one in 5 will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2020).

Men in the local community

Men in Boroondara experience a good quality of life when compared to other Victorian localities, with 83.2% reporting their health as good, very good or excellent in the 2020 Victorian Population Health Survey.

But they also spend almost an hour longer sitting at a work desk than the Victorian average, and as little as 2% of Boroondara men eat enough vegetables.

The latest census also tells us that 5.5% of males in Boroondara experience a long-term mental health condition (ABS 2021).

In response, we are hosting events this year that aim to support men’s overall wellbeing and build community connections.

These events include:

  • Boroondara Wellbeing Conversations: Eat Yourself Happy – the link between food and mood, with Joel Feren
  • Get your dad in the kitchen!
  • Seniors Exercise Park Come and Try Session
  • Dads and Kids Walk with the Y-external site
