This Saturday (7 May) the Lower Clarence community is invited to gather at Maclean Showground from 10am to 4pm to say thank you to the emergency services and people who worked tirelessly for our communities during the recent floods.
Clarence Valley Mayor Dr Ian Tiley said the damage from emergencies such as the recent floods and the bushfires of 2019/20 was not just about the impact to our built environment.
“Much of the cost of disasters is what happens to individuals and the community in the lead up and aftermath of these events,” Mayor Tiley said.
“The Thank You Day is about acknowledging everyone who worked hard to protect our community, and letting people know what services are available to help support them during these times of need.”
A special event will take place at midday as Clarence Valley Council’s Resilient Clarence team lead members of the community to create a huge heart-shaped chain of people which will be filmed from above by a drone. This represents the beating heart of our community and is just one way we can all stand together to say thank you to one another.
The Resilient Clarence team, consisting of Council, Red Cross and Vinnies officers, will be available in the Conversation Corner of the Rocky Mouth Pavilion for anyone looking for tips and tools to help better prepare for emergency situations.
Meanwhile Mayor Tiley will make a formal address to those in attendance at 3pm.
“The most powerful thing I have seen during these recent flood events is the resourcefulness of our Northern Rivers communities,” Mayor Tiley said.
“People looked out for one another, coming together, ready to save our town when it came to the crunch.
“It is important that we get ready before these extreme weather events hit us. By doing so we will ensure our communities are in a better position to respond and recover.
“Make an emergency plan for your household or business, prepare your home to minimise damage and most importantly look after one another. These simple actions can save lives.”
Along with saying thank you, it is also a chance to arm community members with knowledge to help everyone better prepare for future disasters.
The Thank You Day event is being organised by Maclean Chamber of Commerce, St Vincent De Paul and Maclean Lions.
