The distribution of CFA’s new structural helmets for volunteers has recommenced across the state after being suspended earlier this year due to coronavirus restrictions.
The helmets are available to members who hold qualifications in the use of Breathing Apparatus equipment and Search and Rescue.
The project team has developed a revised process to allow for the distribution of the helmets to remaining districts guided by the constraints of COVID-19.
Volunteer firefighters who have yet to receive their new helmet, will receive their helmet via their district office.
With in-person group training postponed, members are required to access training materials online once they have received their helmet. The materials detail how to fit, clean and maintain the new structural helmet.
More than 2,000 helmets had been distributed to 179 brigades as part of the project before distribution was postponed in March.
By the end of this week (25 September) it is expected that all remaining helmets will be delivered to respective district headquarters. Unfortunately, due to current Stage 4 restrictions, delivery to members in districts 13 and 14 remains on hold. We will provide further advice on this as restrictions ease.
The helmets are available to members who hold qualifications in the use of Breathing Apparatus equipment and Search and Rescue.
The new helmets will replace the CFA’s existing structural firefighting helmets for eligible firefighters and feature an improved design and fit to benefit members. More than 5000 CFA volunteers will receive the helmets as part of the project rollout.
CFA Acting Chief Officer Garry Cook said the Pacific F15 Premium jet-style structural helmet provides eligible firefighters with a range of new features.
“This helmet has specific benefits for internal structure firefighting attack, and we’re excited to be able to provide it to eligible volunteer firefighters,” he said.
The helmet includes a one-touch visor, a full-coverage internal face shield, integrated helmet torch, comfort harness and liner, and flame-resistant multi-layer neck flaps.
It also has a reinforced composite shell and an advanced polymer chassis.
“These helmets are modern, innovative and effective, and the CFA is excited to recommence rolling them out to its members across Victoria,” Garry said.
The new structural firefighting helmets were funded as part of the State Government’s $60 million Fire Services Statement.
While the roll-out is underway all existing helmets used by CFA volunteers remain fit for purpose and compliant with relevant Australian Standards.
