Wyndham City is calling on the community to help breathe life into Wyndham by planting trees this National Tree Day (28th of July).
Wyndham City’s Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said National Tree Day will contribute to Council’s goal of establishing 25 per cent tree canopy coverage on Wyndham’s streets and 35 per cent coverage in local parks by 2040, as part of Wyndham’s City Forest and Habitat Strategy.
“Tree coverage can keep us and our precious wildlife cooler during the summer months and remove some of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,” Cr Marcus said.
“The beautification of our streets and enhancement of our environment is a passion many of us in the community share, and what better way to celebrate than to come together and plant trees in our City?”
“Every year, about 300,000 people across Australia get together in their communities to plant trees and here in Wyndham we have plenty of active volunteers who take part in National Tree Day planting day every year.”
“On Sunday 28th July from 10am to 1pm we will be planting trees on the floodway reserve next to 101 Bellbridge Drive, Hoppers Crossing, just opposite Bellbridge Primary School.”
“Everyone is welcome to come along, just make sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring your gardening gloves.”
“Planting trees is thirsty work, so bring your water bottle, and we will put on a tasty lunch for our volunteers, which includes halal and vegetarian options.”
“Wyndham City Council’s Environment Team will be giving away 500 trees to Wyndham residents at the tree planting event, between 10am and 1pm.”
“Council staff will be on hand to provide advice on how to plant your free tree as well as general maintenance tips.”
