Highett Village Common pop-up park: a place to meet and unwind

Community members are enjoying the colourful and fun temporary community space set up at Highett Library, the Highett Village Common.

Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said that it is just one part of Kingston’s commitment to support businesses in their recovery from COVID-19 lockdowns.

“Council’s ‘Love Local’ campaign aims to encourage community members to shop and stay local,” said Cr Staikos. “We have created a variety of outdoor activities that support enjoying shopping in our local precincts, from the roll-out of 100 additional temporary picnic tables to pop-up community spaces and parklets outside businesses.”

The Highett Village Common is a vibrant, multi-use temporary space featuring seating, tables, a lawn and festoon lighting.

The pop-up has been established in a section of the Library Car Park on Highett Road, close to the shopping precinct. Six additional car park spaces have been created in the Library Car Park to support access.

Cr Jenna Davey-Burns, Wattle Ward Councillor and Deputy Mayor said, “this is a place where we can all enjoy a break in a beautiful and fun green space.”

“It is perfect for meeting up with some friends, feasting on some takeaway from our wonderful traders nearby, to sit and read a book or to enjoy a play with the kids. When the lights and neon come on at night, you get that magical summer feeling that is Highett.”

It was recently brought to life with Christmas fun as one of the sites on Kingston’s Tinsel Trail.

“We all need some good cheer after a hard year and Council has brightened up our community spaces and shopping precincts with some wonderful Christmas activities. Under clear blue skies last week our community loved the cheeky acrobat Christmas elves and Santa on a Segway dancing along to the upbeat sounds of the brass band playing Christmas carols. Kids’ faces lit up at the activities and giveaways with a morning full of laughter and big smiles,” said Cr Davey-Burns.

The additional outdoor seating also provides a safe space for Highett traders to take their businesses outdoors and operate in a COVIDSafe way.

“This exciting new initiative for local traders has been made possible under the State Government’s COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund and is part of City of Kingston’s Outdoor Activation Program.”

Council is finalising the details on its next Love Local pop-up piazza at Owen Street in Mordialloc. The Highett Common will be operational until April 2022.
