HMAS Cairns commended for award winning efforts

Cairns Mayor Bob Manning has commended the outstanding efforts of the management and the service men and women at HMAS Cairns as recipients of two Fleet Awards – the Shore Force Safety Award and the Governors Cup.

“To be the recipient of two titles in the annual Fleet Awards, which includes bases and fleet units from across Australia, is no mean feat,” Cr Manning said.

“It is clear recognition of the high standards upheld by HMAS Cairns.

“I congratulate Commanding Officer HMAS Cairns, Commander Alfonso Santos, and all the personnel, who have contributed to this honour.

“HMAS Cairns is an important part of our community and there is little doubt it will play an increasingly critical role in our nation’s national security.

“The growth of HMAS Cairns is also going to play a major part in the city’s future growth and development, and already HMAS Cairns is sticking its hand up to play a bigger part in our community.

CMDR Alfonso Santos said the recognition is a moment of great pride for the base.

“After all the challenges that went along with the Covid-19 pandemic, it is pleasing to see the hard work and tireless commitment of our local teams and personnel acknowledged in this way,” CMDR Santos said.

“Management of our safety culture and systems is central to everything we do at HMAS Cairns.

“I am extremely proud of all the men and women at HMAS Cairns, including our non-uniform and contracted personnel, all of whom have performed admirably throughout 2022.”

CMDR Santos said winning the Governors Cup – awarded to the shore establishment that has excelled in all aspects of operations, safety, training, and support to the fleet- is especially pleasing.

“One of the aspects that motivates us to excel is the engagement and support we receive from the greater Cairns community,” he said.

“That has been a highlight this year and our Defence personnel enjoy and embrace everything that Far North Queensland has to offer.”
