Holiday Heist: A 21% surge in home thefts sparks calls for caution this Christmas

This holiday season Australians are being encouraged to boost their home security measures with NRMA Insurance claims data revealing December is the month when most home thefts occur1.

Last year, NRMA Insurance saw a more than 20% increase in home theft claims across the country in December2.

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Claims Natalie Major said: “We see a surge in home burglaries over the summer holidays as more people are away from their homes travelling or visiting family and friends. Christmas is also a time when we tend to keep more valuables around the home such as presents for loved ones.

In the past 12 months, NRMA Insurance received more than 2,300 claims for home thefts, with bikes and house and car keys the most commonly stolen items during break-ins, closely followed by jewellery, money and mobile phones.

“Thieves are always on the lookout for small items in the home that can be easily grabbed and resold. Bikes and keys are the most targeted item during a home burglary. It’s best to keep these valuables secured indoors and out of sight, away from windows.

NRMA Insurance research3 shows that only 40% of Australians have security cameras or alarm systems installed, suggesting an opportunity for more residents to consider bolstering their home security. The research also revealed that one in five Australians leave their keys in a hiding spot outside.

“If you’re away from your home during the summer holidays, remember to lock up your doors and windows, consider installing house alarms and security cameras, or have a friend, family member or neighbour look after your house,” continued Ms Major

“These simple security measures can significantly reduce the risk of break-ins and protect what matters most to you.”

NRMA Insurance offers a range of home alarms and security systems to provide that added level of protection.

Additionally, the NRMA Insurance research showed 41% of Australians have not checked their home and contents insurance recently to ensure they’re adequately covered.

The increased number of home thefts during the festive season is an important reminder to take precautions to keep your home safe.

NRMA Insurance recommends taking the following steps to protect your home and contents:

  • Install a home alarm system to protect your family and valuable possessions around the clock.

  • Check your windows and doors are locked every time you leave home and don’t leave your spare key outside.

  • Keep valuable possessions, money, and keys out of sight and locked away.

  • Invest in a safe to store valuables.

  • Ensure your garden gates, shed and garage are all locked and always secure the doors that connect your garage to your house.

  • Invest in movement-activated sensor lights to deter intruders.

  • Confirm your home and contents insurance policy reflects the possessions you own.

  • Make a list of valuable family assets and possessions that can’t be replaced and keep receipts or recent valuations in a safe place to help with any future insurance claims you may need to make.
