The Liberals
clearly aren’t doing enough to get Tasmania out of the deepening housing crisis
our state is in.
Today’s figures
from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show building approvals in
December 2022 were down 49.7 per cent from November 2022 to 191 – the lowest
number since July 2017.
This comes on
top of last week’s Housing
Dashboard figures showing the government delivered only 17 new housing
properties in December 2022 – missing their own target by over 80 per cent.
This inaction
is particularly worrying given that were 4,569 applications on the housing
register in December the average time to house applicants continues to rise,
now sitting at 77.9 weeks.
The government
repeatedly claims it is building 10,000 homes in 10 years (83.33 a month).
These figures show just how off the mark they are and how out of touch they are
on the needs of Tasmanians.
A Labor
Government would start by taking immediate action to repair the 215
untenantable social houses left in ruins by the Liberals.
This would get
hundreds of people off the housing waiting list, and would also create jobs for
Tasmanians.
Tasmanians in
need of housing simply shouldn’t have to wait this long to find safe shelter,
and the government continues to let down Tasmanians who are in desperate need.
Jeremy Rockliff seems more concerned about putting a roof on a stadium the state doesn’t need, rather than helping put a roof over the heads of Tasmanians.
