Hudson CEO appointed AAMRI President

Hudson Institute has cemented its position among Australia’s medical research leaders, with Director and CEO, Professor Elizabeth Hartland becoming President of the peak industry body, AAMRI.

The Association of Australian Medical Research Institute’s (AAMRI) confirmed Prof Hartland’s appointment at its annual general meeting, marking the beginning of her two-year term.

As a pre-eminent researcher, strategist and thought leader, Professor Hartland will be leading AAMRI as President into their next chapter, which includes the upcoming consultation in developing a national health and medical research strategy, focussing on funding the full costs of research, and supporting early-to-mid-career researchers.

Brilliant medical research leader

AAMRI CEO Dr Saraid Billiards welcomed the appointment, saying: “Hudson Institute’s Professor Hartland is a brilliant leader, and we’re looking forward to her leading AAMRI as President through the next two years.”

“Elizabeth’s knowledge of our sector, and its policies, funding bodies and researchers, makes her the ideal leader to take us through the next busy years for AAMRI.”

Prof Hartland has previously been a member of the AAMRI Board and been Chair of the Victorian branch, VicAAMRI, making her perfectly positioned to take on the national leadership as President.

“Being part of the board for the past five years has been a great opportunity to work on behalf of the medical research institutes we represent. Now, moving to the role of President I’m looking forward to continuing AAMRI’s work to ensure the long-term future of our workforce and the sector,” said Professor Hartland.

Passionate about the medical research sector

Dr Billiards also thanked Professor Kathryn North AC, Director of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, at the end of her term as President.

“I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to Professor North who is extremely passionate about our sector and has been generous with her time and expertise,” said Dr Billiards.

“It has been a period of growth for AAMRI, and during Kathryn’s time as President, we launched numerous new projects and initiatives, including the AAMRI Rising Star Award, the Respect in Research project, and the MRFF and MREA consultation.”
