An airborne gravity survey is underway across eastern and northern Victoria to help improve the accuracy of GPS measurements and our understanding of geology.
Gravity varies slightly depending on where you are, for example you are slightly lighter at the top of a hill than down the bottom of one. Gravity decreases by a small amount the further you are from the centre of the Earth. More consistent and accurate understanding of gravity will help improve GPS precision and our picture of the geology across a large area of the state.
Flying over the Gippsland and Hume regions throughout 2023, the airborne survey is a collaboration between the Surveyor-General Victoria, the Geological Survey of Victoria and Geoscience Australia.
