In conversation with Marc Newson

Since graduating in jewellery and sculpture from Sydney College of the Arts, designer Marc Newson has gone on to become arguably one of the most influential designers of his generation. Hear him discuss his career, design practice and the themes that have informed his work.

Marc Newson is one of the world’s most innovative, versatile and high-profile global designers. Working across a wide range of disciplines, his clients include companies such as Apple, Louis Vuitton, Montblanc, Hermès, Nike, Dom Pérignon, and Jaeger-LeCoultre. He also served as Creative Director of Qantas Airways (2005-2015) and Designer for Special Projects at Apple since his first involvement in the design of the ‘Apple Watch’ (2014).

After graduating from the University of Sydney in 1986, his first solo exhibition at the age of 23 featured his Lockheed Lounge a riveted aluminium chaise longue that has arguably become one of the most iconic contemporary design works. Newson’s work is now held in the collections of major museums including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Smithsonian Design Museum (New York), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Design Museum (London), V&A Museum (London), Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou (Paris), Vitra Design Museum (Germany), Powerhouse Museum (Sydney), and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne). He has recently been appointed Chair of the London Design Museum’s International Design Council.

We are enormously proud of Marc’s stellar international achievements and that they grew out of his degree at Sydney College of the Arts.
