Mildura Rural City Council has appointed eight community representatives to its inaugural Climate Emergency Community Action Group.
The group aims to create community ownership and responsibility regarding climate-related issues and challenges facing our region.
Carl Young (agriculture), James O’Day (agriculture), Richard Rydberg (business/industry), Jemima Lotika (health), Christiane Jaeger (health), Nathan Curtis (environment), Emma Johnston (environment) and Dylan Butcher (environment) were appointed following a formal Expression of Interest process.
The group, which met for the first time last month, will now help guide the development of a community Climate Emergency Plan. The plan will include community-owned climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
Councilor for Environment and Sustainability Jodi Reynolds said the formation of the Climate Emergency Community Action Group followed Council’s decision to declare a climate emergency in February 2020.
“In the process, Mildura Rural City Council became the 30th local government in Victoria, and the 94th in Australia, to take this action,” she said.
“Our community representatives come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and we’re really excited to work with them to develop the municipality’s first community Climate Emergency Plan.
“This group will also take the lead in delivering the actions within this plan, helping to deliver real change.”
