Indigo Shire’s first sustainable subdivision will soon become a reality with Council approving a permit to develop an environmentally sustainable seven-lot subdivision in Beechworth.
The project is the first to be developed using the Sustainable Subdivision Framework (SSF), which seeks to provide council planners with a basis for measuring and achieving stronger sustainability outcomes in residential subdivisions.
The framework is currently being implemented by 31 councils across Victoria in partnership with the Council Alliance for a Sustainable Built Environment (CASBE).
“Sustainability underpins all of our decision-making and this framework is another way to ensure it is always front of mind,” says Indigo Shire Mayor Sophie Price.
Owners of the 1.13 hectare property, Sandy and Anne Geddis are thrilled with the outcome and that the SSF has provided a way for their vision to be realised.
“The SSF was an opportunity that we couldn’t afford to not take up – for the benefit of ourselves, our grandchildren, and the environment in general. The philosophy and the requirements associated with the framework are consistent with our core values,” said Mr Geddis.
The Geddis were supported in the later stages of their development application by Simon Blackwell, an Environmentally Sustainable Development (ESD) Planner engaged by Goulburn Murray Climate Alliance (GMCA).
The 12-month support role was co-funded by GMCA member councils including Indigo Shire, and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) with the aim of supporting developers and council planners engaged in the SSF.
“Mr Blackwell was very helpful and encouraging and importantly gave us hope when we’d lost some in the early stages of the development application process. He is currently developing a case study on our project for CASBE which we’re very excited about,” said Ms Geddis.
Cr Price says Council is proud to be supporting this first – and standout project – for the Shire and to have successfully collaborated with the Geddis to reach an outcome that aligns so strongly with both the Geddis’ and Council’s vision and values.
