INDUSTRY CONSENSUS SHOWS LIFESAVING REFORM SHOULD BE PASSED NOW: TWU

Transport Workers' Union

The TWU has welcomed the renewed support of Uber, DoorDash and Menulog for reform that will set fair, safe and sustainable standards for transport gig workers.

TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine said:

“As the largest representative of small business transport operators in Australia since our founding, the TWU has always understood that fairer, safer standards make flexibility and independence more attainable.

“Gig companies’ early support for reform was an important acknowledgment that enforceable standards create a level playing field that benefits everybody.

“The Federal Government has tabled a sophisticated, world-first system that ticks the right boxes and has now won support from all sides.

“The unanimity across the industry from transport workers, gig companies, major employers, and transport clients shows that this is the right approach. It’s now up to Federal Parliament to respond to industry consensus and pass lifesaving transport reform into law without delay.

“Gig workers deprived of rights like minimum wage shouldn’t have to wait any longer for their jobs to become safer, fairer and more sustainable. Three transport gig workers have died this year. Workers urgently need protections that will ease the pressure to work longer and faster to make ends meet.”
