Interactive local history collection offers unrivalled peek at past of Sutherland Shire

The history of Sutherland Shire can be explored like never before with a digitised and interactive local history collection being launched at Sutherland Shire Libraries.

The launch includes a new website, which holds digital copies of thousands of items of significance to the Sutherland Shire, including images, maps, oral histories and collected ephemera from the local history collection housed at Sutherland Library.

The collection will also be showcased at Sutherland Library with a digital touch table, featuring interactive curated content.

“This collection will allow members of our community to interact with their area’s past and contribute to the project of preserving and sharing Sutherland Shire’s history,” Sutherland Shire Mayor, Councillor Carmelo Pesce said.

“Those interested in the history of the Sutherland Shire will now be able to search a vast wealth of material, previously only partially available online, providing opportunities to explore the history of the region and discover links between the many items that form part of the collection.”

The website has been designed to allow visitors to save their favourite images, as well as add information to items such as names of people and places, and dates or details.

More than 240 maps, including old subdivision maps, can also be viewed and
