On Tuesday, 8 March the City of Canada Bay celebrated International Women’s Day with a special morning tea and talk featuring Walkley-award winning investigative journalist Jess Hill. The event was opened with a Welcome to Country from Rowena Welsh from Metro Local Aboriginal Land Council.
“International Women’s Day provides a useful opportunity to reinforce the fact that everyone has a role to play in forging a more gender-balanced world,” said City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas, who opened the event. “Hosting this wonderful event and having our special guest Jess Hill here supports this raising awareness against bias and hopefully helps change language and behaviour.”
More than 40 members of the local community came along to the Cabarita Conservatory to hear Jess speak about the complex issues impacting women in both public and private life, ask questions, and share some of their own stories.
Jess has been reporting on domestic abuse for several years and is the author of See What You Made Me Do, a deep dive into the subject and how we can confront family violence. She is also the host of The Trap podcast, which explores the dynamics of love, abuse and power in personal and professional relationships.
