Some of the world’s top footballers have arrived in Western Australia ahead of the Perth International Football Cup, which kicks off tomorrow at HBF Park.

The latest in a series of major football events exclusively hosted in Perth, and the first of its kind in Australia, the Perth International Football Cup will feature four matches between four elite women’s football teams over the next five days.

Western Australia has welcomed Women’s Super League (WSL) teams Manchester City, West Ham United, and Leicester City, as well as France’s Ligue 1 team Paris Saint-Germain.

The WSL is the highest profile women’s football league in the world and the women’s equivalent of the English Premier League.

Australian star players Mary Fowler, Alanna Kennedy, Katrina Gorry and Courtney Nevin are among the current players set to take to the pitch for the event.

As part of the competitive exhibition tournament, each team will play one match before playing off in a double-header final on Sunday, 1 September.

Ancillary events including a fan festival at Elizabeth Quay on Friday, 30 August and a public screening of the Matilda’s documentary Trailblazers on Saturday, 31 August will add vibrancy to the city for this week-long festival of football.

At a grassroots level, private technical and coaching clinics will also be held with host clubs, allowing players to engage with the local football community.

The Perth International Football Cup is part of a growing collection of world-class women’s football events secured for WA, including the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, which generated over $25 million for the WA economy, and the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Asian Cup 2026.

The tournament aligns with WA Government’s strategy to promote the State as a world-class event destination and deliver an always-on calendar of events for Western Australians and visitors alike to enjoy.

As stated by Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti:

“The eyes of the world are once again on WA and I’m sure football fans are eagerly awaiting the start of the Perth International Football Cup, which further cements our reputation as a global sporting events destination.

“The event will bring thousands to HBF Park, providing an opportunity for the next generation of football stars to see these top-tier athletes play the world game live and in-person, right here in Perth.

“Events like this add so much vibrancy to our city, driving visitors to experience our diverse calendar of events, generating millions for our economy and ensuring there is something for everyone whenever they come to visit Western Australia.”

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

“There is clearly an appetite for more women’s football as we’ve seen registrations in the sport reach record highs since last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“It’s fantastic to be welcoming these world-class teams to Perth to play at the award-winning HBF Park, which underwent a $35 million upgrade in recent years to ensure it is fit to host the highest calibre of football events.

“It’s an exciting time for women’s football, with a significant rise in the popularity of the sport, and the WA Government is proud to support the Perth International Football Cup to recognise and grow that interest.”
