Investigation launched into suspected discharge of firearm in Blackett

An investigation has been launched after police were alerted to a video circulating on social media depicting a discharge of firearm in Sydney’s west.

Detectives attached to Mount Druitt Police Area Command were made aware of the video yesterday (Tuesday 20 April 2021), which depicts a large group of men involved in what appears to be a pre-arranged fight at Popondetta Park at Blackett.

As two separate fights are occurring in the park, with numerous people watching on, an unknown man is seen to produce a firearm and discharge a single round in the direction of another unknown man, who appears to be attempting to flee the scene.

It is not clear from the video whether the man was injured and there have been no reports of relevant admissions at local hospitals.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including identifying those depicted in the video, are underway.

Initial inquiries have determined the incident took place some time ago, possibly in late February, and a further canvass of the area is expected to be undertaken today (Wednesday 21 April 2021).

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
