Investigators dismantle sophisticated family day care fraud syndicate, NSW

Detectives have arrested 18 people and executed more than 20 search warrants today as part of an ongoing investigation into family day care fraud.

In July 2018, detectives from the Financial Crimes Squad and Organised Crime Squad, along with the Australian Government Department of Education and Training and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC), established Strike Force Mercury to investigate the coordinated fraudulent activities targeting family day care operations.

The strike force has also been assisted by the NSW Department of Education and NSW Crime Commission.

As part of ongoing investigations, Strike Force Mercury detectives executed 22 search warrants at properties across south-west Sydney and one property in the Illawarra from 6am today (Wednesday 8 May 2019).

During the operation, a total of 18 people (three men and 15 women) were arrested and taken to local police stations, where they are expected to be charged over their alleged roles in the syndicate.

Police will allege in court that the syndicate fraudulently claimed for Commonwealth benefits under the Child Care Subsidy schemes.

Further information will be made available when it comes to hand.

Investigations under Strike Force Mercury are ongoing.
