As one of Tasmania’s most popular visitor attractions, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are an incredible asset to our State and play an important part of both Tasmania’s history and the visitor economy.
Importantly, the Gardens are the botanic heart of our capital city are being provided with funding to ensure the gold medal-winning tourism attraction remains a much loved treasure for both Tasmanians and visitors alike.
That is why I am pleased to announce that the Botanical Gardens will receive an additional $450,000 in the Tasmanian Budget 2022-23 and a total of $1.05 million over the next four years in additional funding to support increasing annual operational expenditure.
This additional funding will also go towards the review of the Gardens Strategic Master Plan and the Strategic Conservation Asset Management Plan which will help to set the direction into the future.
As the second-oldest botanic garden in Australia, the Gardens attract around half a million visitors each year.
The Gardens are Australia’s cool climate garden, with a number of unique collections including Australia’s only Subantarctic Plant House.
With more than 200-years of rich history and 14 hectares containing over 6,000 species, they remain an outstanding living collection for all to explore.
We know that the Gardens are an important place of well-being and enjoyment for many Tasmanians, and I hope locals and visitors alike can continue to experience and enjoy this beautiful space.
