Irresponsible fear-mongering on council reform

Nic Street, Minister for Local Government

As per usual, Labor are scaremongering and peddling blatant mistruths when they talk about skyrocketing rates and tying local government reform to the cost of living issues the State and the rest of the country is experiencing.

Minister for Local Government, Nic Street, said it was irresponsible and creates a distraction from what the local government review is all about.

“It’s about the bigger, longer-term picture of ensuring ratepayers get value for their rates by having councils on a more sustainable financial footing,” he said.

“That will allow them to deliver the vital community services Tasmanians need and deserve.

“The review has found concerning gaps across the sector leading to the sub-standard delivery of important functions.

“Cutting rates would means cutting services. Cutting rates would mean job losses in local government. Cutting rates would mean reduced service delivery. Mr Edmunds can’t have it both ways.

“Labor are incapable of delivering an alternate budget and are notorious for making un-costed election commitments that would plunge the State into more debt.

“We know Labor can’t be taken seriously on financial matters, and what is becoming increasingly clear is Mr Edmunds can’t be taken seriously on matters of Local Government.”
