Council is gearing up for a bumper week of events all focused on a very special group of our community – our youth.
Youth Week will run from 4-14 April and is focused on encouraging 12 to 25 year old’s to take part in engaging youth activations that celebrate the diversity and creativity young people offer in our community.
Mayor Michael Regan said the national event will feature a range of programs and activities ranging from sports, arts, music, fitness, and leisure activities with this year’s theme ‘It’s up to YOUth.’
“This annual event is so popular it has been running for 33 years now. We have so many activities planned we have extended the week to fit them all in.
“Our youth have ridden the COVID roller coaster the last couple of years and it’s nice to see this event bring them together for much-needed social interaction and to learn a thing or two.
“This year, Council’s youth development team have worked with a number of local youth service providers to develop a diverse program to appeal to a wide variety of young people.
“Council’s Youth Advisory Group have also played a key part, being involved from early planning stages to eventual delivery of Youth Week activations,” Mayor Regan said.
The first event to kick off Youth Week celebrations is on Saturday 26 March with a Vert Skate competition at Mona Vale Skate Park across multiple age categories. This event is made possible with collaboration from Monster, Avalon Youth Hub, Youth Up Front and Oakley.
Having fun is mandatory when taking part in events so Discoability is back – a fun junior disco for high school-aged young people of all abilities at the PCYC on Friday 1 April.
The following day Bags to Riches Youth Week Market will be on at Walter Gors Park in Dee Why. Young creatives will be selling their handmade goods, youth musicians will be providing entertainment and food on offer by Youth Up Front.
Music is always a hit and the popular Ruby Fields will headline an event at PCYC on Friday 8 April thanks to funding from Great Southern Nights, in collaboration with Headspace, One Eighty, and PCYC.
‘From music to markets, road safety workshops, a photo comp, mural painting and much, much more, Youth Week is a great chance for everyone to have fun and celebrate the contribution young people make to our community,’ Mayor Regan said.
