Jacinta Allan’s Big Housing Build ‘Big Let Down’

Liberal Party Victoria

The Allan Labor Government has comprehensively failed Victoria’s most vulnerable, with new figures revealing the dire state of public housing.

Labor has built just 394 extra public housing properties since 2018 despite spending a staggering $5.3 billion and pledging to build 12,000 new homes by 2024.

Figures released by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing also show since 2018:

  • Victoria’s public housing waitlist grew by 19,686 families
  • Total public housing bedrooms decreased from 160,348 to 157,615 – a decrease of 2733
  • Wait times for families fleeing domestic violence to be relocated into a new public housing property grew from 8.8 months to 23.6 months.

The continued growth in Victoria’s public housing wait list and waiting times comes despite $5.3 billion having been spent on Labor’s ‘Big Housing Build’.

Shadow Minister for Housing, Richard Riordan, said: “The Big Housing Build has been a Big Let Down.

“Jacinta Allan has squandered billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money and at the same time failed Victoria’s most vulnerable.

“This is yet another example of Labor’s gross waste and mismanagement which has had dire consequences for those desperately needing a roof over their head.

“These numbers also make a mockery of the Premier’s claim that she will build 800,000 new homes over the next decade.

“Like her broken promise on the Commonwealth Games, it is a con and she simply cannot be believed.”
