  • Wednesday 23 June 2021, Cairns/Newcastle: Travellers can now enjoy direct low fares travel between Cairns and Newcastle, with Jetstar’s new flights taking off between the two popular holiday destinations today.

The three-per-week service is operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft and will carry 6000 visitors between the two regions each month, delivering a significant tourism boost to both cities.

To celebrate the first flight taking off today, Jetstar is launching a 12-hour flash sale at midday AEST with fares from $89^.

Jetstar Group CEO, Gareth Evans said Jetstar was excited to become the only airline operating this route, linking two of the country’s most spectacular tourist destinations.

“Newcastle has become one of New South Wales’ most sought after holiday destinations, with its beautiful coastline and reputation as a lively culinary and artistic hub.

“Cairns is consistently one of the most popular destinations in our network, so we expect this to be a very popular route in both directions,” Mr Evans said.

“These new flights are not only great news for our customers wanting to explore new places, it will also provide a boost in tourism for both cities which is great for local businesses.

“We thank the Queensland Government for their support in making this route a success.”

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Jetstar service to Cairns would open up access from Newcastle for the first time.

“Non-stop flights from the second biggest city in New South Wales means even more Novacastrians will be escaping to Cairns for tropical sunshine and some of the world’s best tourism experiences,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“These extra flights from Newcastle are expected to support 41 jobs and up to $5.2 million for the Palaszczuk Government’s COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan in the Far North.

“And we know Cairns & the Great Barrier Reef are just the places to show Novacastrians an unforgettable, world-class holiday.”

Chief Operating Officer of Cairns Airport Garry Porter said the new service will support the connectivity of 16,000 additional visitors to Tropical North Queensland between now and October.

Newcastle Airport CEO Dr Peter Cock said ticket sales have exceeded expectations.

“After a tough 18 months, people deserve a holiday and Tropical North Queensland is the ideal destination to escape the NSW winter to a warmer climate. World heritage listed sites such as the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest just under 3-hours away.”
