Joint search warrant locates Red-Eared Slider turtles

Fremantle Detectives, working with Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) located protected and illegal animals at a home in Hammond Park after information was shared between agencies.

On Thursday 4 June 2020, officers from the three agencies executed an inter-agency search warrant under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 at a property on Barfield Road.

During the search warrant it is alleged officers located and seized:-

• Two Red-Eared Slider Turtles, which are native to southern USA and Mexico, are one of the world’s worst invasive turtle species and are illegal to keep as pets in all states of Australia;

• A Stumpy Tailed Barking Gecko: and

• Two young kangaroos.

A 20-year-old man from Hammond Park was charged with:

• Possess Fauna – S.152 Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 – $2,500 infringement issued by DBCA

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is continuing enquires in relation to a charge of:

• Dealing with a declared pest s23 Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.
