Disaster assistance has been made available to repair roads and other essential infrastructure damaged by Tropical Cyclone Blake and help those worst hit get back on their feet in parts of the Kimberley, Pilbara and Western Australian Goldfields in January.
Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management David Littleproud said personal hardship assistance is now available in the heavily impacted local government areas of Wyndham-East Kimberley, Derby-West Kimberley, Broome, East Pilbara, Wiluna, Laverton and Upper Gascoyne Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
“Tropical Cyclone Blake hit the coast hard, causing destructive winds, heavy rainfall and flooding,” Minister Littleproud said.
“Providing financial assistance to those worst hit, helps give people back their dignity. “
“By providing funding for practical assistance such as clean-up operations and the restoration of damaged public infrastructure, we’re also helping communities get back on their feet as quickly as possible.”
Minister Logan said Tropical Cyclone Blake, the associated thunderstorms and flooding caused significant, widespread damage to roads and other essential infrastructure.
“Our regional and remote road network serves a critical role in keeping Western Australia moving,” Minister Logan said.
“Through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, these impacted local governments can now access assistance to help with the cost of clean-up and repairs without the risk of being financially worse off.
“The Commonwealth and Western Australian governments continue to monitor the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Blake and are ready to extend disaster assistance to communities in need.”
