The construction of the Chain of Ponds is one of the first steps on the journey to build the new nature reserve.
As part of the extensive wetlands, the Ponds will include a main stream, ephemeral soaks and billabongs and extend from the northeast corner down to the centre of the reserve. The Ponds will be lined by walkways and viewing points.
When complete, the wetlands will improve the quality of water flowing into Port Phillip Bay and provide a diverse habitat, that along with new tree and vegetation will encourage native wildlife back to the area.
The first stage of works is expected to be commence later in 2020 and will involve preparing the site ahead of construction of the Ponds. During construction access to sections of the reserve will be prohibited, there will be more information to follow.
Other projects underway in the reserve include the recently completed demolition of the former golf house and planting of additional trees to aid biodiversity and boost tree cover.
As part of the ten year masterplan of works proposed upgrades include new grassy woodlands, visitor facilities, indigenous gathering places and a gateway feature building.
The community will be invited to provide feedback on future stages of the masterplan.
