Judy Australia 1964 at Whitehorse Centre

Relive the concert tour that made headlines around the world. Judy Australia 1964 tells the story of Judy Garland’s most memorable and publicised performances that took place at Sydney Stadium and Melbourne’s Festival Hall.

In 1964, the legendary entertainer Judy Garland was contracted to perform three concerts in Australia. After an illustrious career spanning four decades, audience expectations were high and whilst Garland’s two Sydney concerts were sensational; her Melbourne performance was disastrous.

Operatic contralto, Liane Keegan, becomes the iconic star, and takes us on a journey that recreates one on the most controversial episodes in Australian entertainment history. Backed by a seven-piece show band, Keegan is spellbinding as she performs many of the most loved of Garland’s songs, written by some of the great composers of the 20th century.

Keegan has enjoyed a stellar career on opera stages across Australia, Europe, and the UK, and has established a reputation as one of this country’s finest dramatic contraltos. Here she channels her unique dramatic and vocal talents in a surprising new direction – playing Garland.

Whitehorse Councillor Andrew Munroe who saw Keegan perform an excerpt of “Judy” at the Centre’s 2020 launch, said “I was blown away by Liane Keegan’s fabulous voice and how she really got into the Garland character. I am sure our audiences will love the show.”

A unique insight into Garland’s infamous 1964 Melbourne concert was received from Whitehorse Centre staff member, Ann O’Halloran, who was in the audience that night. “I remember the show at Festival Hall very well. It was certainly a very memorable experience but perhaps not quite for the right reasons.” Ann saw Keegan perform an excerpt at the Centre’s 2020 season launch and said, “It is so special that Garland’s tour is being re-created in this new show.”

Judy Australia 1964 will appear at the Whitehorse Centre on Friday 27 March 8pm, Saturday 28 March 8pm & Sunday 29 March 2pm.
