Johnstone Park is set to come alive with brilliant colours and evocative music when a 700-square metre Kaleidoscope maze opens to curious community members this Saturday 13 May 2013.
Renowned Victorian installation artist Keith Courtney has brought his latest creation to Geelong in the form of 70 tonnes of glass, mirrors, steel and moving prisms.
Running until Sunday 18 June, Kaleidoscope is set to dazzle visitors who walk through the life-sized mirror maze with its radiant white light by day and everchanging deep colours at night.
The construction of the large-scale installation is the result of a long-term working relationship with South Geelong’s Robert Lange Engineering and Menzel Glass, who also built his House of Mirrors and 1000 Doors projects.
This is the first time one of Keith’s pieces is being shown in the very location where it was constructed.
To celebrate Kaleidoscope and the creative arts throughout Autumn and Winter, visitors are invited to ‘Kick On in Geelong’, with a special program of offers and deals from local businesses helping visitors to make the most out of their time in the city.
Collaborations with artist Samantha Slicer, visual artist Ash Keating, composer Tamil Rogeon and the National Boys Choir of Australia helped to create the cathedral-style experience.
Kaleidoscope is dog-friendly and will operate from 2:00pm to 9:00pm Wednesday through to Sunday (last admission 8:30pm). Community members can also experience the artwork on Monday 12 June (King’s Birthday Public Holiday).
Tickets are $15, plus booking fee (5 and under and over free).
Kaleidoscope will next travel to Bathurst in NSW, Qlds Gold Coast and Auckland in New Zealand.
