The Cook Labor Government is delivering an additional $400,000 to drive safety upgrades at the Kalgoorlie International Speedway.
The new investment builds on a $2 million commitment made at the 2017 election, taking the Cook Labor Government’s total investment in the facility upgrades to $2.4 million.
Works will see the existing track fence replaced with modern safety barriers, boosting protection for drivers and spectators and ensuring the venue meets contemporary safety standards.
The upgrade will support the speedway to grow grassroots participation and welcome visiting competitors and supporters to the Goldfields, which will deliver benefits for local tourism and businesses.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2027, with the upgraded facility ready for competitors and fans to enjoy in the 2027-28 racing season.
The works form part of the Cook Labor Government’s PlayOn WA initiative, which is investing in quality community sport and recreation infrastructure across Western Australia.
PlayOn WA will deliver 2,030 infrastructure items by 2030, delivering long-term benefits for communities across the State.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Rita Saffioti:
“This additional $400,000 investment will help deliver important safety improvements for drivers and spectators at the Kalgoorlie International Speedway.
“Regional sporting venues like this bring the community together, and these upgrades will support the people who keep grassroots motorsport running in the Goldfields.
“By improving the speedway’s facilities, we’re also supporting events that bring visitors to the region, creating opportunities for local businesses and supporting local jobs.
“Through PlayOn WA, we’re investing in community sporting infrastructure across the State so more Western Australians can enjoy the sports they love and get involved in their community.”
As stated by Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:
“A night at the speedway is a chance for local families and motorsport fans to come together, cheer on their favourite drivers and enjoy the racing.
“This investment is welcome news for the volunteers, drivers and supporters who put so much into the Kalgoorlie International Speedway, helping make the venue safer for everyone.
“I look forward to seeing local racers back on the upgraded track for the 2027-28 season, alongside visiting competitors and fans who will have even more reason to make the trip to the Goldfields.”
