Work is progressing well at the Katherine Work Camp, with 20 prisoners currently accommodated at the facility and infrastructure works underway.
Prisoners have played a significant role in renovating and preparing the site for long-term operations through supervised maintenance and refurbishment activities.
The Katherine Work Camp has been established with the intention of creating new partnerships and local jobs in the Big Rivers region while supporting a safer and stronger Territory.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government is continuing to deliver on its commitment to reduce reoffending and strengthen community safety, with the Katherine Work Camp reaching another important milestone in its staged commissioning.
Work camps provide low security prisoners a facility where they can attend workplace readiness training and vocational programs while in custody, before connecting them with suitable employers for supervised employment opportunities.
Minister for Corrections Gerard Maley said the work camp was progressing well, with prisoners already accommodated on site and major infrastructure works underway.
“The Katherine Work Camp is a nation-leading initiative that combines rehabilitation, vocational education and employment pathways for prisoners approaching the end of their sentence,” Minister Maley said.
“Importantly, it is also creating opportunities for prisoners to build practical skills, contribute to the local community and prepare for successful reintegration into the workforce.”
Infrastructure works at the Katherine Work Camp continue to advance, with installation of permanent anti-climb perimeter fencing on track for completion in August.
Works have also commenced for staff accommodation, parking spaces, and the site’s commercial kitchen, which is expected to be completed later this year.
The Katherine Work Camp forms part of the Northern Territory Government’s broader Corrections Infrastructure Master Plan, which is delivering modern, fit-for-purpose corrections infrastructure across the Territory.
