Clean-out works have commenced at the Grange Road Wetlands in South Yarra.
The Grange Road Wetlands play an important role in treating urban stormwater runoff from the South Yarra area by filtering out litter, pollutants, and sediment, before it can enter the Yarra River (Birrarung), and ultimately Port Phillip Bay.
The Wetlands require a clean out to remove sediment and dead and overgrown vegetation, to improve water flow and removes blockages, ensuring it continues to filter at full capacity.
Wave Maintenance, who successfully cleaned out Percy Treyvaud Wetlands in December last year, has been engaged to:
- Drain out the wetlands
- Remove dead and overgrown vegetation
- Let the built-up sediment dry out in preparation for responsible disposal (either within the wetland footprint itself or using the bike path area if required)
- Transport dry stockpile to a licensed landfill for disposal.
It is expected that works will start this month and be completed by late January 2023, after which time in-fill planting will be completed if necessary.
Path users and nearby residents have been notified of the works and an alternative path has been selected in consultation with the Transport Planning team to ensure cyclists can move freely and safely through the area during the works period.
Situated on the bank of the Yarra River, the Grange Road Wetlands are home to a range of fauna including frogs, aquatic birds, mammals, turtles, water skinks and invertebrates.
