Kidnapping and Extortion Charges

Financial Crimes Squad officers have charged three men over an alleged kidnapping and extortion incident relating to a 68-year-old man.
It will be alleged that on 23 April 2023, the man arrived in Perth via Melbourne from China. He was accompanied from Melbourne to Perth by a 29-year-old man whom he had met regarding a proposed business deal.
On arrival in Perth they were conveyed by an associate of the 29-year-old man to a residence in Caversham, where a third man was waiting. It will be alleged the 68-year-old man was subsequently held against his will and assaulted a number of times. It will be further alleged members of his family were also contacted, requesting sums of money for his release.
On 25 April 2023, officers from the Financial Crimes Squad identified the man’s location and forced entry into the Caversham residence. The man was found inside the house with various injuries, and was conveyed to hospital for treatment.
Three men – a 29-year-old, a 37-year-old and 31-year-old – have each been charged with Kidnapping, and Demanding Property by Written Threats.
Both the 29-year-old man and-37-year-old man first appeared in Midland Magistrates Court on 27 April 2023. Their next court appearance will be in Midland Magistrates Court on 12 May 2023 and 26 May 2023, respectively.
A 31-year-old man will appear in Perth Magistrates Court today (29 April 2023).
