Tasmanian Labor
  • Grace Tame named Tasmanian Australian of the Year
  • Worthy recognition of courageous campaign
  • Advocacy empowers survivors
  • Labor Leader Rebecca White has congratulated #LerHerSpeak campaigner Grace Tame on being named Tasmanian Australian of the Year for 2021.

Ms White said the win is well-deserved recognition of Grace’s courage and dedication on behalf of sexual assault survivors.

“Grace Tame’s brave fight to be allowed to speak about her own experience of being groomed and raped by her teacher has given a voice to all survivors,” Ms White said.

“By turning her horrific experience into a fight for the rights of other survivors, Grace has demonstrated extraordinary courage and made a real difference.

“Her push for legal reform, which saw her become the first Tasmanian woman to win the right to self-identify as a rape survivor, gives inspiration to other survivors of sexual assault.

“Grace is an extremely worthy Tasmanian of the Year and I offer her my sincere congratulations.

“Congratulations also to Tasmania’s other Australian of the Year recipients – Senior Australian Brian Williams, Young Australian Toby Thorpe and Local Hero Edna Pennicott.

“I applaud all the nominees for this year’s awards and I thank them for their achievements and contributions to our community.”
