Labor leader’s legacy of lows

Peter Gutwein,Premier

Rebecca White has become such a disappointment as it is obvious that playing politics is now more important than people’s lives.

I have been very clear with Tasmanians that the positions we have taken are based on Public Health advice, to save lives and rebuild our economy without risking a second wave of infections.

While Ms White has publicly stated “a cautious approach to easing restrictions was the best model going forward” it appears her sensible position is now nuisance to her political ambitions.

We have eased stage two restrictions less than a week ago and Public Health is on the public record as saying adequate time between easing restrictions and the next phase, including borders, is required to ensure the risk is managed.

I have consistently said we will announce a date to lift our border restrictions in early July. If I receive Public Health advice that it is safe to do this sooner, then Tasmanians will know as soon as possible, as has been my approach and practice throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

I urge Ms White and Labor to not let the history books show they stand for nothing but political gain, but to work with the Government on a responsible and safe recovery process, guided by Public Health experts.
